By far the best way to do this is by using CleanMyMac (which I've been using for about 5 years). CMM helps you to clean up old system files, the trash bin, perform maintenance tasks and check your Mac for malware. Performing the ‘smart scan' is something I do every few weeks to keep my Mac ticking along nicely.
With CleanMyMac, you can also identify large files that are taking up space that you can delete, you can easily uninstall old apps and their system files and perform other optimisation tasks.
I also use Hazel to automatically move old files to the trash and keep my trash bin size down by deleting files that have been in there for more than 30 days.
Oh, and don't forget to start a Time Machine backup of your Mac. You only need to lose an important file or project once to realise how important it is to have a backup.
