Why is my logo a mug of coffee? [PMP #279]

When I created my personal website back in 2014 like most new businesses, I thought to myself, ‘What should my logo be?’ I really didn’t give it too much thought at the time and that’s kind of the point of this story.

When you’re starting a new business, it’s easy to get caught up and distracted by things like a company logo, website, branding etc. but what really matters is launching your new product or service and getting some experience, as quickly as you can.

So when I thought about what my logo should be, I looked at a few other independent workers around me and saw what they were doing. I saw people like Brett Kelly, whose logo was a pair of glasses. And Paul Jarvis, whose logo was a rat. I was drawn to these people because they also had personal brand websites and were offering up their skills for hire, like me. I also liked that their logos communicated something about their personalities. So I thought, what’s something I like that says something about my personality and I landed on a mug of coffee. I also quite like how coffee has some connotation with productivity as it can help you to focus and get your work done.

So that’s the story. I really didn’t spend too long thinking about it…

To this day, I’ve never changed my logo. I’ve thought about it. As I’ve grown I’ve thought about designing something more professional. But every time I think about it, I decide to prioritise other things. I just don’t see how spending time on a logo will make that much difference to my business. I’m almost at the point where I’ve decided to keep the logo as is, as a reminder to myself about what’s important. A bit like how Jeff Bezos’s original desk was a door and he used this for many years as a reminder of his humble and scrappy beginning. My desk door is my coffee mug logo…
