The worst thing you can do in the morning

This post is part of my “Guidelines” series where I analyse memorable book quotes and examine how to apply them in real life.

“The old saying, “You Snooze, You Lose” may have a deeper meaning than any of us realized. When you delay waking up until you have to—meaning you wait until the last possible moment to get out of bed and start your day—consider that what you’re actually doing is resisting your life. Every time you hit the snooze button, you’re in a state of resistance to your day, to your life, and to waking up and creating the life you say you want.” – Hal Elrod, The Miracle Morning (book summary)

What does it mean?

I love this quote from The Miracle Morning. In fact, keeping this idea in my mind is the reason I have no issue getting up at 5am most days. I completely agree and feel it’s a very bad idea to start your day by saying “no” to getting up. By snoozing, you're saying “no” to all your responsibilities and it’s as if being asleep is more bearable than facing life.

Action steps

Ignoring your snooze button and jumping out of bed is a nice idea, but it’s easier said than done. So, what are some things you can do to make getting up easier?

  1. Move your alarm clock across the room.
  2. Make gradual changes to your wake time. Start by getting up 15 or 30 minutes earlier, then gradually get up earlier and earlier.
  3. Have a reason to get up e.g. morning meditation, reading, journaling.
  4. Make getting up early a habit. Once you’ve been getting up early for a week or two, you’ll find it gets a lot easier to maintain.
